The 1st ISIAN meeting (1976)

The first International Symposium on Infection and Allergy of the Nose (ISIAN) was held from November 12 to 14, 1976, with Professor Takahashi (now professor emeritus of The Jikei University School of Medicine) as chairman, at the Imperial Hotel in Tokyo.

The aims of the ISIAN meeting were to create a forum of the international rhinologist in the field of infections and allergies and to promote the knowledge of rhinology in various parts of the world and, at the same time, to advance friendship among rhinologists across the world.

A total of 77 papers, including 38 from Japan and 39 from other countries, were submitted. The presentations were divided into 15 sessions and 1 film session, and 3 topics - "Nasal Allergy: Basic" "Nasal Polyp," and "Nasal Allergy: Surgical Treatment" - were considered particularly important. In addition, Prof. Takahashi, the president of the meeting, gave a lecture entitled "Environmental Factors in the Development of Infections and Allergies of the Nose and Paranasal Sinuses." Invited lecturers included Professor Connell (New York), who gave a lecture entitled "Histological Classification of Noninfectious and Nonsurgical Nasal Diseases," and Professor Naumann (Munich), who lectured on "The Nasal Mucosa and its Resistance towards Infection." Registered participants numbered more than 400, including more than 100 from outside Japan.

Professor Takahashi hosted a reception on the eve of the meeting at Happoen, which is famous for its Japanese garden. Entertainment included a Japanese traditional performance.

Participants from Europe and the United States were impressed by this well-managed international meeting held in Japan. The success of the 1st ISIAN meeting led to further ISIAN meetings held in Europe and the United States.

The 2nd ISIAN Meeting (1980)

The 2nd ISIAN meeting was held from October 20 to 23, 1980, at the Palazzo Dei Congressi in Bologna, Italy, in conjunction with the 8th meeting of the European Rhinologic Society (ERS). The president of the ISIAN meeting was Prof. Van Cauwenberge (Belgium), and the president of the ERS meeting was Prof. G.Sulsenti. A total of 113 papers, including 27 by Japanese rhinologists, were presented.

Although Prof. Naumann of Germany was originally named the president of the ISIAN meeting, Prof. van Cauwenberge stepped in when circumstances required Prof. Naumann to step down.

The 3rd ISIAN Meeting (1982)

The 3rd ISIAN was held in conjunction with the 9th ERS meeting from September 6 to 8, 1982, at Folkets Hus in Stockholm, Sweden. The president of the ERS meeting was Prof. Drettner, and the president of the ISIAN meeting was Prof. Anggard (Sweden). Professor Drettner named Japanese rhinologists as chairmen of all symposiums and panel discussions to show respect to the Japanese colleagues who founded ISIAN. The combined meeting comprised 7 symposiums, 129 paper presentations, 16 poster presentations, and10 videos and films. Five papers were simultaneously translated from French to English, and 7 papers were translated from German to English. Many Japanese rhinologists participated, and a total of 32 papers from Japan were presented.

The 4th ISIAN Meeting (1984)

The 4th ISIAN meeting was held in conjunction with the 10th ERS meeting from August 26 to 29, 1984, in Nancy, France. The president of ERS meeting was Prof. Wayoff, and the president of the ISIAN meeting was Prof. Anggard (Sweeden).

The 5th ISIAN Meeting (1986)

The 5th ISIAN and the 11th ERS meeting were held in Athens, Greece, from June 15 to 17, 1986. The president of the ERS meeting was Prof. Coyas, and the president of the ISIAN meeting was Prof. Anggard.

The 6th ISIAN Meeting (1987)

The 6th ISIAN meeting was held from September 9 to 12, 1987, at Federation of Economic Organizations Hall in Tokyo, to commemorate the 10th year of ISIAN meeting. The president was Prof. Yoshio Honda (now professor emeritus of The Jikei University School of Medicine). A total of 122 presentations were made (5 special lectures, 48 presentations in 9 symposiums, 64 papers, and 5 posters). The participants included 398 rhinologists from Japan and 114 from 24 other countries, including 2 communist countries. All participants felt that ISIAN had truly become an international rhinologic meeting. Social events included a party, a Japan night, a banquet, and many women's programs.

The 7th ISIAN Meeting (1988)

The 7th ISIAN meeting was held from June 19 to 22, 1988, in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in conjunction with the 12th ERS meeting. Professor Huizing was the president of both meetings. Many rhinologists from Japan attended the meetings.

Abstracts of the presentations were published in a supplement of the Journal of Rhinology.

Many papers first presented at the ISIAN meeting were later published as full papers in the Journal of Rhinology.

During the business meeting, it was decided that, in order to support ISIAN, the president of ERS would remain as a board member of ISIAN for four years after completion of his tenure as the president of ERS. The ISIAN board was thus consisted of three members from ERS (the president of ERS. immediate past president of ERS and next-immediate past president of ERS) three members from JRS (Japan Rhinologic Society) and three members from North and South Americas. The president of ISIAN has always been a board member of ISIAN. The ISIAN board was later joined by the delegate from South Korea (Prof. In Yong Park) and from the Philippines(Prof. Gil Vicente).

The 8th ISIAN Meeting (1989)

The 8th ISIAN was held from June 11 to 15, 1989, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The president was Prof. David Kennedy. This was the first meeting held outside of Europe or Japan. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Centennial of the founding of Johns Hopkins Hospital and the meeting was held in Turner Auditorium of Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions. Attendance included participants from the Japan, other parts of Asia, Africa and Europe. For many US attendees, it was their first exposure to an ISIAN meeting. Social events included an evening sailing on a replica tall ship called the Pride of Baltimore, and a faculty dinner in the garden of the Kennedy's home.

The 9th ISIAN Meeting (1990)

The 9th ISIAN meeting was held in conjunction with the 13th ERS meeting from June 24 to 29, 1990, in London, England. The presidents were Prof. Brain for ERS meeting and Prof. Mackay (England) for ISIAN meeting. One highpoint of the meeting was a short speech by Professor H. H. Hopkins, the inventor of the rod optic telescope, as well as the zoom lens and fiber-optic gastroscope. It was his work that really led to the revolution in endoscopic surgery.

The 10th ISIAN meeting (1991)

The 10th ISIAN, with Prof. Shunkichi Baba as the president, was held in conjunction with the International Rhinologic Society meeting Emeritus Prof. R.Takahashi, president from September 23 to 28, 1991, in Tokyo.

The 14th ERS and the 11th ISIAN were held in conjunction with each other from October 6, 1992 to the 10th in Rome, Italy. The president of ERS and ISIAN meetings was Prof. Passali.

The 12th ISIAN Meeting (1993)

The 14th ISIAN Meeting (1995)

The 16th ISIAN Meeting (1997)

The 16th ISIAN meeting was held in the historic American city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, from June 5 to 8, 1997. The president was Prof. Kennedy (University of Pennsylvania). The meeting was held in conjunction with Cottle International Rhinology Centennial of the American Rhinologic Society.

The 17th ISIAN meeting was held in conjunction with the 17th ERS meeting from July 28 to August 1, 1998, in Vienna, Austria. The president of both meetings was Prof. Stammberger, a pioneer of endoscopic sinus surgery. The meeting was held in the historic Hoffbrau Palace and had strong attendance from Eastern Europe as well as from all over the world.

The 18th ISIAN Meeting (1999)

The 24th ISIAN Meeting (2005)

The 24th ISIAN meeting was held from April 20 to 22, 2005, in Sao Paulo, Brazil, with Prof. Stamm as president. The meeting was held in conjunction with the meeting of the Brazilian Rhinology Association. This meeting broke all prior attendance records, with over 1,500 participants.

The 26th ISIAN Meeting (2007)

The 27th ISIAN meeting was held in conjunction with the 22nd ERS meeting from June 15 to 19, 2008, on the island of Crete. The president of the meetings was Prof. Papavassiliou. Participants in total were more than 800. Many doctors from ISIAN countries except for EU participated (Japan:45, Korea:45, Malaysia:5, Russia: 22, USA:24, Turkey:124, Brazil:11, Ukraine:11, Philippines:3, Indonesia:4, Saudi Arabia:16, etc).

The 28th ISIAN meeting (2009)

The 28th ISIAN meeting was held from April 15 to 19, 2009, in Philadelphia, USA, with Prof. J. Palmer as the president. The meeting was held in conjunction with the meeting of the International Rhinologic Society (Prof. D. Kennedy). A total of 1131 participants came from 56 countries. The ISIAN delegate medal was passed from past president Prof. T. Papavasiliou to the next president, J. Palmer.

The 29th ISIAN meeting (2010)

The 29th ISIAN meeting was held in conjunction with the 23rd ERS meeting from June 20 to 24th, 2010, in Geneva Switzerland. The president of the meetings was Prof. J.S.Lacroix. Participants in total were more than 1000 from 64 countries. The largest contingent came from China with 115 delegates. The ISIAN delegate medal was passed from past president Prof. J. Palmer to the next president, J.S.Lacroix.
